Flying into Durango–La Plata (DRO) is definitely the most convenient option—it’s the closest airport to Silverton and typically the smoothest travel experience. The drive from Durango to Silverton takes about 1.75 to 2.25 hours, and it’s a gorgeous route through the San Juan Mountains. Flights into Durango can be pricey, especially in peak months (summer & fall), but booking well in advance helps keep costs down.
If you’re looking for alternatives, Montrose (MTJ) is a great option. It’s roughly 1.75 to 2.25 hours from Silverton via Ouray and often has more affordable flight options depending on your departure city. You can also fly into Albuquerque (ABQ), which offers a wider range of flights and competitive fares. The drive to Durango is about 4.5 to 5.5 hours, with easy highway access the whole way.
Lastly, Denver (DEN) is always an option if you’d like to add a mini road trip. The drive from Denver to Durango takes around 6 hours, and while it’s a bit of a trek, it’s incredibly scenic.
